Excellent White Bordeaux

Clos des Lunes

Clos des Lunes by Olivier Bernard.  One of the few estates in the Sauternes to produce only dry white wines, & we are huge fans.

The charismatic Olivier Bernard, winemaker of Domaine de Chevalier since 1983, knows a thing or two about white wines.  His Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, Grand Cru Classé in Pessac Leognan, is amongst the best dry white Bordeaux every year and competes with the world's greatest white wines in its complexity & elegance.  A partner in Chateau Guiraud also, Olivier he is well versed in the fine terroirs of Sauternes, presenting him with a tempting prospect.  Convinced of the potential of Sauternes vineyards to make great dry white wines also, he began Clos des Lunes.

  • 70% Semillon & 30% Sauvignon
  • A well-established vineyard, situated between Chateau d’Yquem and Chateau Guiraud, averaging 30 years of age.
  • Gravel soils over clay, sand & limestone.
  • All the work in the vineyard is organic.
  • Clos des Lunes make 3 cuvees: the entry level Lune Blanche, Lune d'Argent which represents the heart of the production, & the top selection, Lune d'Or.

2021 is a great vintage for dry white wines, & Lune d'Argent is particularly impressive this year (it it includes all the fruit that might have gone into the top selection.)  A great dry white Bordeaux, labelled Grand Vin Blanc Sec.

The highest yet rated, 2021 Lune d'Argent is very classy indeed, with enticing intense and complex aromatics - lemony limey Sauvignon Blanc notes and a hint of dry honey.  The mouthfeel is where this really shines, with layers of Semillon fruit with dry honey, rounded creaminess and minerality and focus through to the finish. Weighty with fresh acidity that cuts through.  Already delicious but also good to tuck away as it will develop more roundness and texture with time.

"The 2021 Lune d'Argent has a taut and focused bouquet, with touches of Granny Smith, petrichor and stem ginger all delineated and gaining intensity. The palate is well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity, very poised. Just a hint of bitter lemon lends tension, segueing discretely into a spiced finish. Excellent."  2027-2040

"There is no Lune d'Or in this vintage due to frost; the entire production is in the Lune d'Argent cuvée."
