Beyond Napa
"If readers are looking for an intrepid drinking experience at the pinnacles of wine quality that will blow your Napa preconceptions out of the water, Promontory will take you there and beyond." Wine Advocate
In 2008, the Harlan family of Harlan Estate acquired a unique parcel of land in Oakville, Napa. It neighbours Harlan Estate and BOND, with Dominus to the south, but this high mountain terroir is special.
This is rugged wilderness, with vines covering just 10% of the property in small steep plots, and mountain lions and bobcats roam.

- A fascinatingly complex terroir, with an 'island' of metamorphic rock, unique in Napa. This is flanked by sedimentary and volcanic rock. A point at which two faultlines cross & very unusually, Earth’s 3 geological formations are found in one place. Amid forest & wilderness, 40 acres of vines in a patchwork are planted on steep and rugged slopes within an overall area of 840 acres.
- Separated from Harlan Estate by half a mile and “a tongue of forest”, the woodland helps to give Promontory a cooler microclimate than many other vineyards in Napa Valley.
- Promontory sets itself apart from other Napa Cabernets, with a different profile to the fruit. For this reason, Promontory takes a different approach to maturation: with ageing is in large Austrian oak casks for longer to capture and preserve the purity and verve of the fruit.
The hallmarks of Promontory are minerality, linear drive and mineral focus, weightless structure & an exceptionally long finish.
