NEW RELEASE: Opus One 2008

Opus One label

Opus One is the collaboration between Mouton Rothschild and Mondavi in the Napa Valley with the aim of producing the Californian equivalent of a Bordeaux First Growth.  We are pleased to offer the newly released 2008 vintage of Opus One which will be available in late October 2011.

Since the arrival of winemaker Michael Silacci in 2001 the quality has markedly improved and the style has been more consistent.

"although great wines were made in the pre-Silacci era, since 2004 he hasn't put a foot wrong and has turned out a succession of supremely good wines." Stephen Brook, Decanter Magazine

Since his arrival at Opus Silacci feels that the style of wine has changed "The wine has greater concentration and a longer finish. The wines express the vineyard and the vintage with clarity and purity, and they have fewer fingerprints on them. I believe the wine is more approachable upon release and the core is in balance with its texture and structure".

2008 Opus One - £820 per case of 6

92 Points "Graceful and elegant, very understated and delicate, with floral, spice, mint, bay leaf, currant, cedar and tobacco notes that are complex and vibrant. Full-bodied, gaining on the finish, then firming and drying. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec"

James Laube, Wine Spectator, Drink 2011-2021

93 Points "Good red-ruby color.  Rather wild, nuanced nose combines blackcurrant, dusty brown spices, tobacco, mocha, leather and meat.  Juicy and energetic in the mouth, with enticing inner-mouth florality giving lift to the dark berry, licorice and bitter chocolate flavors.  Not a particularly dense or fruity style but boasts nicely integrated acidity and already displays a lot of personality.  Finishes with substantial but fine-grained tannins, a hint of licorice and excellent persistence.  Winemaker Michael Silacci noted that this wine features the highest percentage of petit verdot to date.  And he's convinced that co-fermenting it with the cabernet sauvignon diminished the natural rusticity of petit verdot"  Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar
