Tasting Notes

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very pretty and pure bouquet, the oak here deftly integrated and allowing the dark cherries, cranberry and raspberry scents to flourish. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins framing the pure confit-like red fruit, just a splash of balsamic towards the finish lending another welcome dimension. I suspect that this will mature with style and panache. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru was picked on 23 September and includes 35% whole bunch with 40% new oak. It has a very refined and harmonious bouquet with vivacious red cherry, wild strawberry and bergamot aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and focused, not the greatest depth of all the Clos de Vougeots that I have tasted but I appreciate the energy and freshness locked into this wine. It should not require too much bottle age.

Deep colour, rather blearily oaky, not as fresh as I would like on the nose, but the palate turns this on its head. There is a wealth of fruit overlaid with creamy oak, real density and excellent length.

A moderately high-toned nose features primarily notes of various red berries, earth and a hint of leather. Additionally there first-rate freshness and verve to the precise, intense and muscular yet caressing and succulent big-bodied flavors that are supported by a driving, powerful and very serious finish that is, not surprisingly, youthfully austere. This isn't a refined version of the appellation but it doesn't lack for underlying material. And despite the succulent mid-palate, this clearly is not fashioned to be approached in its youth.

Two parcels, one-third from the top and the balance from the lower section of the vineyard. This has very expressive ripe cherries, making it a very sapid, fresh and powerful wine. Attractive depth and expansion through the finish. Try from 2022.

Blackberry and raspberry with subtle spice and an attractive peppery note to the finish. Not as complete as their Lavaux St-Jacques, but still has plenty of concentration and intensity. Sleek, polished texture.
