Tasting Notes

This possesses one of the most complex noses in the range and features a panoply of spice elements along with exceptionally fresh and dense black fruit, violet and plum aromas which are trimmed in generous oak and menthol notes. There is excellent power to the focused, intense and attractively vibrant flavors that have a firm yet silky mouth feel before terminating in an explosively if ever-so-slightly warm finish. This stony built-to-age beauty is quite firmly structured but not forbidding as it's not particularly austere.

Dark red-ruby. Knockout high-toned nose combines dark raspberry, violet, minerals and gingerbread, plus a note of cherries macerated in alcohol. Offers a rare and almost painful combination of silky fullness, fruit sweetness and salty energy, filling the mouth with perfume while conveying a magical lightness. Finishes with noble tannins and outstanding floral lift and length.

The 2016 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru has much better definition and focus than the Chapelle-Chambertin at this stage: copious black and red fruit that feels more regimented and precise. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin, layers of blackberry, blueberry and a touch of burnt toast leading to a structured and symmetrical finish that bodes well for bottle age. This will rank alongside the 2015 Clos de Bèze—superb.

Half a crop only. Not so dense in colour, the new oak shows more than the fruit at first. The oak is too pronounced at the moment but the fruit should cope in due course, it starts gently then builds towards the back, the epitome of finesse. Little red berries show at the back and just enough acidity.

Score: 92 - 95
