Tasting Notes

The 2019 Le Carillon d'Angélus has another high-toned and quite alcoholic bouquet - you can feel the warmth from the glass and it blurs the edges. The palate is more controlled with fleshy black fruit. The oak is well-integrated. Smooth in texture, the acidity is nicely judged, though the finish just lacks a bit of flair at the moment. Bottle age will benefit this wine. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

The 2019 Le Carillon d'Angélus, bottled in May 2021, has a delineated, poised bouquet of those same aromas that I observed from the barrel sample bottle – black cherries, raspberry and iris petals– though with a very slight marine influence that becomes more accentuated with time. The fresh palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainier tannins compared to last year, fine grip and a touch of black pepper toward the finish. This is a very fine Deuxième Vin that should drink well after 3–4 years, so wait a little longer than I initially advised.

The 2019 Le Carillon d'Angélus, matured in 60% new oak and the rest in one-year old, is perfumed on the nose with detailed black cherry, raspberry and pressed iris petal scents that are neatly integrated with the oak. The palate is silky smooth on the entry with finely detailed black fruit laced with cracked black pepper. This feels very cohesive and focused with a sensual finish, completing a classy second wine that will give up to 15 years of drinking pleasure.

The 2019 Le Carillon d'Angélus has turned out beautifully. Succulent and racy to the core, with gorgeous understated balance, the 2019 is impeccable from start to finish. Dark red fruit, chocolate, new leather and spice are nicely pushed forward. The 60% new oak is a bit prominent at this stage. It will be interesting to see how that plays out over time.

The 2019 Le Carillon d'Angélus is broad, ample and enveloping. There is plenty of fruit richness, but a good bit of tannin, too. Far from an easygoing second wine, the Carillon is going to need a few years to come together. Inky dark fruit, spice, menthol and licorice build into a finish endowed with real weight and gravitas. Le Carillon is a blend taken from vineyards in three locations; Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, the Cheval Blanc/Figeac sector and around the château. It is a serious medium-range offering from Angélus.Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal described 2019 as a year marked by an alternation of hot days and cool nights, with the most severe heat in June. PHs were lower across the board than in 2018. I was especially impressed by the No. 3 de Angélus and Le Carillon d'Angélus, which seem to benefit from the strong year and a new winemaking facility dedicated to their production. As for the Grand Vin, well it is truly Grand.

This is the vintage where you start to see the results of the new plots for Carillon (one near Cheval Blanc and another in St Colombe), with supple berry fruits and floral aromatics, along with softly brushed tannins and smoke. This is elegant and well paced, with plenty of espresso and cocoa bean gourmet edging. Bottled May. 60% new oak. 20ha now dedicated to Carillon d'Angélus (with 5ha going into both Carillon and No 3 d'Angélus). New cellar for first time, reflecting the fact that since 2014 there have been plots dedicated only to these two wines.

The second wine of Château Angelus, the 2019 Le Carillon D'Angelus is Merlot-dominated yet includes 10% Cabernet Franc. It's a more backward, serious wine compared to the fleshy, upfront N3 and offers a deep purple hue as well as impressive crème de cassis, crushed stone, chocolate, graphite, and violet aromas and flavors. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully textured, with the vintage's supple, sweet tannins, this brilliant second wine will compete with most châteaux grand vin.

A really succulent, refined second wine with berries, chocolate and light toasted oak. It’s full and completely integrated with seamless tannins and a fresh finish. Lovely, sweet ripe fruit in the center palate. Extremely refined. 90% merlot and 10% cabernet franc.
