Tasting Notes

Cloves, saffron, turmeric, this goes long on spicy cloves and red pepper, with cinammon and cocoa bean. All this alongside plenty of luscious dark fruits, blackcurrant and bilberry, giving juice and balanc. This is well structued, with clear life ahead, heavy on the spice right now. 75% new oak. Ronan Laborde owner. 38hl/ha yield

Sculpted, savoury, spliced-fruit feel, this stretches out through the palate with silky tannins layered up with cigar box, cocoa bean, espresso, sage and violet notes and a clear uplift of slate minerality on the drawn out finish. Luc Chassorieu is director of production, Ronan Laborde owner (this was his 17th harvest at Clinet). Bottled in June 2021; one month less ageing than in 2018. 80% new oak, 38hl/ha yield. This was Ronan's 17th harvest at Clinet, and contains more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend than in 2018 (the vines are almost 70 years old now).

Seductive and appealing blend of rich coffee and chocolate alongside pulsing cassis and bilberry fruits. Great quality Clinet, extremely well expressed with controlled ripe fruits and firm tannins that provide a pretty strict frame at this point. This is a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon for a Pomerol wine, and it gives characteristic poise and balance. A yield of 38hl/ha. 75% new oak.

The 2019 Clinet has quite a focused, graphite tinged, Cabernet Franc driven nose that offers fine complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity, though it just loses a little refinement towards the finish. Fine sapidity, but it needs more length and precision overall. I've encountered better examples - this Pomerol might well be closing down. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

The 2019 Clinet has maintained the stunning delineation that I discerned from the barrel sample. Pure black cherries, hints of cassis and wilted violet scents unfold in the glass with effortless ease, and the oak (75% new, 25% used for 18 months) is neatly integrated. The poised palate is medium-bodied, taut and fresh, with fine-grained tannins and disarming mineralité, particularly toward the finish, which delivers tremendous length and saliva-inducing salinity on the aftertaste. There is a pleasing strictness to this Clinet that is apposite to the flamboyant and decadent wines of the Nineties. This Clinet is one of Ronan Laborde's great achievements.

The 2019 Clinet is just so fragrant on the nose: black and red fruit vying for attention, iris and incense, touches of truffle in the background. The purity that Ronan Laborde and his team have achieved should be applauded. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, perfect acidity, brilliant focus and a killer sense of tension on the finish. This is a stunning Clinet, the best that I have encountered in barrel over 20 years of tasting. That creamy texture takes your breath away. Up there with the very best - a Clinet that rivets you to the spot.

The 2019 Clinet is fabulous, just as it was in barrel. A wine of substance and depth, the 2019 has a sense of poise that is so appealing. Crushed flowers, spice, menthol and dried herbs add pretty savory top notes. The 2019 is impeccable from start to finish.

The 2019 Clinet is a dark, sensual wine. Grilled herbs and crushed flowers give the 2019 a pretty, savory dimension to play off the natural potency of the year. A virile and imposing Pomerol, Clinet has plenty to offer, especially once the tannins soften. Two thousand nineteen is an outstanding vintage for Clinet.

An 80/20 split of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that will spend 16-20 months in 75% new French oak, the 2019 Château Clinet sports a dense purple color as well as a stunning bouquet of blackcurrants, mulberries, unsmoked tobacco, chocolate, damp earth, camphor, and who knows what else. Beautifully textured, flawlessly balanced, and full-bodied, it builds incrementally on the palate and has perfectly integrated acidity and tannins, no hard edges, and world-class purity of fruit. It shows the mix of power and elegance that makes this vintage so compellingly. Don't miss it.

A firm, silky red with blackberry, black-olive, green-olive and stone aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied with juicy fruit and a flavorful finish. The balance and texture of this wine is exceptional.
