Tasting Notes

Bright dark red with ruby highlights. Pungent aromas of blackberry, crushed herbs and meat. Plusher in texture than the Gevrey village blend but quite dry, even a bit cool, offering a savory quality to its dark berry and violet flavors. Quite full in the mouth but I wouldn't call this a fruity style. The tannins are ripe and not at all hard.

Score: 91

This is sufficiently reduced to suppress the underlying fruit and I would strongly suggest decanting this if you're tempted to try a bottle young. The suave and mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors possess plenty of underlying tension before culminating in a delicious if slightly tangy, austere and dry finish. This will need a few years to flesh out and better harmonize.

From four parcels located in the four corners of the vineyard and matured in 50% new oak, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux was showing just a touch of reduction on the nose when I tasted it. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh red cherry and raspberry notes. There is good structure here: solid tannins that impart a sense of density, verging on opacity toward the finish. It will need 4-6 years in bottle before it reaches its drinking plateau, but it will be worth the wait.
