Vosne Romanee Malconsorts 1er Cru 2016

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru, which had recently been bottled, has a tightly wound but intense bouquet that responds to aeration. The fruit appears a little darker than the 2015 with just a touch of pressed iris coming through. The palate is well balanced with a fresh, quite grippy entry. I admire the focus and precision on the display here and like the 2015, the stem addition is judiciously interwoven into the fabric so that it does not impede upon terroir expression. It feels long and tender on the finish, completing a Malconsorts with immense potential.

A more deeply pitched and cool array of violet, spice, dark currant, earth and floral aromas introduce the rich, robust and obviously powerful big-bodied flavors that brim with minerality on the driving and built-to-age finish. Textbook Malconsorts in every sense including the need to age it. In short, this is a knockout. Outstanding

Allen Meadows, Burghound Maturity: 2034+ 10 January 2019

Medium red. Tangy, highly perfumed aromas of raspberry, cranberry, damson plum and cardamom. At once dense and penetrating, displaying excellent acidity and inner-mouth tension but a bit youthfully disjointed at present. This wine does not offer the early deliciousness of the Beaux Monts but it has even more nervosité and more tannic support. Finishes with bracing notes of sappy red cherry and flowers. Not at all a bruiser, this beauty will need a minimum of five or six years of cellaring upon its release.
