Special Designation: Highly Recommended Antinori’s Chianti Classico Riserva is consistently outstanding, and classic in 2020. The grape source is the iconic Tenuta Tignanello, the source of Antinori’s game-changing super Tuscans Tignanello and Solaia. CEO Renzo Cotarella oversees the winemaking. His team blends 90 percent Sangiovese with Merlot and Cabernet Franc after fermenting and malolactic conversion in open-topped, conical stainless steel tanks; aging takes place in 225-liter French oak barriques for 14 months. The wine’s iron, olive and tobacco notes deliver that Tuscan feel, and the riserva designation, for just a few dollars more, ensures greater depth, structure and longevity than the annata. Score: 95 Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator 31 October 2023 |

A sleek, elegant red, with fine purity to the aromas of cherry, black currant, iron, olive and tobacco. Shows new oak on the palate, lending both spice notes and structure offset by ample fruit and texture. Balanced, complex finish. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2026 through 2047. Score: 95 Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator 09 August 2023 |

This is like a Brunello in its structure with excellent length. Racy and focused. Aromas of violets and dried flowers with hints of bark and dark cherries. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins and a gorgeous finish. One for now or the cellar. Drinkable but better after 2026. Score: 94 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com Maturity: 2023+ 24 July 2023 |

The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori, all from the Tignanello estate, is packed with black cherry, spice, new leather, licorice and dried flowers. A dollop of Merlot adds plush contours, but this is a pretty pushed style, that works well here. Ideally, though, it would be nice to see more Sangiovese and Tignanello character.
