Tasting Notes

Deep red-ruby. Ripe aromas of black raspberry and mocha, plus vanilla and chocolate oak notes. Rich and fine-grained, with excellent chalky energy giving lift to the flavors of spicy red fruits, minerals and sexy oak. Has the depth of fruit to support its big, oak-driven tannins. This intensely flavored wine became sweeter and more exotic with 24 hours in the recorked bottle.

Deep, chalky notes intermixed with black fruits, camphor, and an almost ethereal floral note make for a full-bodied wine that has slightly more austerity than Laforge or Teyssier (two other wines from the same team), but considerable style and nobility. In addition, it is substantial, powerful and capable of 20 years of longevity.

2010: Much of La Carre’s tiny production (a total of 300 or so cases) comes from high class real estate near Chateau Canon and Clos Fourtet on the limestone plateau and hillsides of St.-Emilion. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc aged in 80% new oak, the 2010 exhibits a dense purple color, abundant black fruit characteristics, undeniable sucrosity, a big, juicy texture, beautiful purity and a long finish with the oak present, but subtle. It will probably reveal more tannin after bottling, and should age well for 15 or more years.

(an 85/15 blend of merlot and cabernet franc; 3.7 pH; 14.7 % alcohol) Deep ruby. Perfumed aromas of ripe red cherry, sweet spices and aromatic herbs. Fresh and clean in the mouth, with flavors similar to the aromas. The long finish features supple mounting tannins. This parcel of vines, situated next to Clos Fourtet, was originally purchased from Chateau Canon.

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the Le Carre has fine purity and terroir expression on the nose: blackberry, briary, a touch of undergrowth. Good definition. The palate is medium-bodied, a little chewier than Les Asteries with a ripe, rounded blackberry and mineral finish. Very fine. Drink 2013- Tasted March 2011.

The clay-limestone terroir really shows. Dense, dark and minerally on the nose. Firmly framed with tight, chalky tannins. Good length and balance.

Quite ripe, with an almost sweet feel to the blueberry, blackberry and boysenberry notes. This has a very creamy and flattering mouthfeel, but there's freshness as well, buried on the finish and adding length.
