Tasting Notes

The 2022 Franc-Mayne has turned out beautifully, bursting with aromas of sweet raspberries and blueberries mingled with espresso roast, spices, rose petals and violets. Medium to full-bodied, suave and seamless, it's lively and textural, with sweet tannins and a long, perfumed finish.

Superb as the 2020 was, the 2022 Franc-Mayne appears to represent still another step up in quality for this seven-hectare clay-limestone terroir. Offering up aromas of dark berries, plums, raw cocoa, violets and bay leaf, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy, with a pure and vibrant core of fruit, supple tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish. The label marks this estate's first year of organic certification.

The 2022 Château Franc Mayne is based on 100% Merlot that was raised in 50% new barrels. Spicy black cherries, underbrush, leather, and violet/incense-like notes all define the aromatics, and it's a medium to full-bodied, nicely balanced, concentrated Saint-Emilion that will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 15+ years in cold cellars. I love its complexity, and it develops a terrific sense of minerality with time in the glass.

Beautiful aromatics of red, blue, and black fruits, as well as tobacco and leafy herbs, emerge from the 2022 Château Franc Mayne, a youthful, unevolved, yet pure, concentrated 100% Merlot barrel sample. The tannins here are ripe and nicely integrated, and it has plenty of mid-palate depth as well as outstanding length, all pointing to this being a brilliant wine in the vintage. Tasted twice.

The 2022 Franc Mayne has a winsome bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and light rose petal scents. It's well defined with neatly integrated oak. The palate is fresh on the entry, with crisp tannins and a touch of graphite infusing the black fruit tones with a clean and precise finish. There's good sapidity here. This is definitely worth seeking out.

The 2022 Franc Mayne has an attractive nose with dark cherries, iodine and light floral scents. The oak is nicely incorporated. The palate is rounded on the entry with a slightly viscous texture. Lots of concentration is packed into this Saint-Émilion, but it retains balance and delivers a sumptuous sweet finish. Lovely.

Aromas of blackberries and dark cherries with some fresh herbs such as basil follow through to a full body with silky and slightly chewy tannins and a juicy finish. Fine tannin texture at the end. A structured young Bordeaux. Made from organically grown grapes. Drink after 2028.

A fresh and bright pure merlot with velvety tannins. Always in place. Some salt and chalk, too. Medium to full body. Made from organically grown grapes.

The 2022 Franc Mayne is beautiful but also very young. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2022 is a big, dense wine. A blast of dark red-toned fruit, new leather, spice, menthol, licorice and dried herbs fills out the layers. Beautifully long and persistent, Franc Mayne has a lot to offer. This sensual style will provide rewarding drinking for the next several decades.

The 2022 Franc Mayne (100% Merlot) is superb. Dense and ripe, the 2022 impresses with its energy and overall tension. I especially admire the energy here. Dark fruit gravel cedar and tobacco, with blood orange and rose petal accents. This could turn out to be special.

This is good quality, with depth to the smoked earth, sweet red and black fruits, fresh acidities of gooseberry and redcurrant, and smoky creme caramel notes together ith a bitter black chocolate signoff. The tannins close in showing the physiciality of the vintage. New team at Franc Mayne for the past couple of years. First year in organic certification. Thomas Duclos consultant since 2018. 50% new oak barrels and 50% of wooden casks and amphoras.
