Tasting Notes

Minerally on the nose, this vibrant red features a core of crushed raspberry and black plum fruit, wrapped in an aromatic thread of rose hip, sandalwood, dried thyme and graphite. Shows lightly chalky, well-meshed tannins, which provide fine definition and emerge to firm the finish. Elegant. Drink now through 2033.

The 2019 Schist Syrah is floral and juicy with fantastic depth and finesse. Aromas of red plum and dusty raspberry sway with polish and purity before revealing seductive floral tones of rose and lavender in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is instantly impressive on the palate with supple tannins; it is both broad-shouldered and balanced and glides to a seductively long finish. Only 2,700 bottles were filled after the wine rested for a year in 50% new French oak.

Blueberry, wild plum, peppercorn, oyster shell, tile and five spice on the nose. Slate, too. Medium-bodied with firm, grainy tannins that turn fine. Peppery and spicy with bitter bark and tar notes. Tight. Unfiltered. One of our favorite wines from South Africa. Better after 2023.

The 2019 Syrah Schist has a nicely detailed bouquet that opens in the glass, delivering plenty of black currant, cassis and violet scents, plus a touch of game in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins that belie the depth of this Syrah. Beautifully balanced, seamless and satiny in texture, this just slips down the throat. It will be difficult to resist in its youth.

Floral, svelte and peppery, this is the Mullineux Côte Rôtie for me, with fine-boned tannins, rose petal and peony aromas, lots of whole bunch clove spice and texture and a meaty undertone.
