The 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano is one of the best editions of this wine I have ever tasted. Ripe blue-toned fruit, spice, chocolate, leather and licorice fill out the layers in an ample, full-bodied Gran Selezione. The Marchesi Antinori 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano is the most modern, or "international," of the Gran Selezione wines presented by this legendary estate this year. It is also the wine with the most noticeable oak signature, revealed as sweet tobacco and spice. The Badia has lots of mature fruit, volume and softness. It is made with 100% Sangiovese, but this specific growing site with reddish soils always produces richer, darker and heavier wines. It leaves a bigger footprint for sure.
