Tasting Notes

There is a discreet touch of wood framing the cool and stony aromas of primarily dark pinot fruit and earth nuances. The medium weight flavors evidence more minerality on the precise, clean and balanced finish where a touch of youthful austerity arises. Note: from 40+ year old vines in the tiny .74 ha vineyard of Champs Pennebaut that are blended with fruit from Les Champs de Charmes; 20% new wood

(20% new oak): Healthy dark red. Dark berries and smoky minerality on the inviting nose. Tangy dark berry and saline flavors show a hint of rusticity, but harmonious acidity energizes and lifts the middle palate and extends the back end. Plenty ripe but with good verve, this wine finishes with dusty tannins and good length. This wine is made from two parcels, one planted on deep clay with rocks and the other on yellower, finer, chalkier soil where the millerandé grapes always get riper, according to Mortet.

The 2014 Fixin Vieilles Vignes is a blend of two vineyards at the north and south of the appellation: brawny and elegant expressions of Pinot Noir respectively. The vines here are between 60- and 70-years-old and this vintage is matured in 20% new oak. The nose is lively with blood orange infusing the brambly red fruit, quite feisty with a touch of peppermint. The palate is succulent on the entry -- tart red cherries with tangy marmalade, attenuating slightly towards the finish that curtails the persistence. Otherwise this is very fine.
