Compared to Lafite ’97, this seems more mature on the nose and lacking the similar sense of harmony. Blackberry, cedar, damson, cigar box – but just lacking some vigour and chutzpah. The palate is better than the nose, harmonious with Latour’s signature firmness. Great definition, more weight than Lafite with notes of blackberry, leather, tobacco and a touch of game leading to a tannic, natural, tobacco-infused finish. A conservative Latour that does not particularly transcend the vintage. Score: 91 Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com 31 July 2008 |

Medium red. Roasted currant, lead pencil, grilled nuts, tobacco and minerals on the nose. Smooth, vinous and concentrated, with lovely depth of flavor and ripe acidity for the vintage. Finishes with even tannins and excellent length. A very successful '97. Score: 91 Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com 01 May 2000 |

Red-ruby color. More classic blackcurrant, licorice and shoe polish aromas. Then, lovely sappy sweetness on the palate, with impressive inner-mouth sweetness. More solidly structured than the Forts de Latour. This is just the kind of deceptively accessible '97 that may show more power and grip after another year in barrel. Nicely integrated, lowish acidity (but the pH here is actually lower than that of the '95). Boasts excellent length for the year. Score: 90 - 93 Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com 01 May 1998 |

A flavorful, savory Latour, without a great deal of density or power, the 1997 exhibits sweet, walnut-tinged, black currant fruit intertwined with minerals and subtle wood. Nicely-textured, with adequate acidity, ripe tannin, and a medium-bodied finish, this smooth effort should drink well for 12-14 years. Score: 89 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2000-2014 30 April 2000 |

…Will be a surprisingly fine wine….It possesses more tannin and depth than most 1997's along with medium to full body… Sweet jammy fruit is intertwined with dried herbs, coffee, and earth in this saturated ruby/purple colured wine Score: 90 - 91 Robert Parker, WB Guide 5th Ed.
