Tasting Notes

Good deep red. Much less reduced on the nose than Ruchottes, offering captivating, high-pitched perfume of raspberry, rose petal, blood orange and crushed stone. On the palate, the tangy raspberry, red cherry and mineral flavors show a penetrating character and superb lift without any weightiness or hardness. Finishes with very fine-grained tannins and mounting floral perfume. This brisk, cool, aristocratic wine is built for a graceful evolution in bottle.

The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques - En St. Jacques is a new bottling inspired by the original layout of the vineyard in which just the top and middle section were planted to grapes. I tasted the three micro-parcels - top, middle and bottom - separately, in and of itself a fascinating exercise, and then a hypothetical blend that will be about 60% top and 40% middle. A striking, powerful wine, the 2013 En St. Jacques hits the palate from all directions, with intense fruit, voluptuous texture and firm, vertical tannins. At bottling time, Rousseau added most of this juice to the Clos St. Jacques, although a small amount was set aside for the estate's library. Readers who have a chance to taste the 2013 are in for a real treat. Last updated April 8, 2015.

This is also notably ripe with its expressive and attractively cool nose of black cherry and raspberry, earth, floral and discreet spice elements. The palate impression is impressively rich with excellent volume along with plenty of the hallmark minerality suffusing the sleek, refined and gorgeously long finish. This is terrific and I particularly like the harmony of structural elements. Don't miss! Outstanding

The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques, which will be matured in 80% new oak, has a perfumed bouquet with bright strawberry and redcurrant scents, superb delineation and minerality coming through, but only after five minutes in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with good density. I’ve tasted Clos Saint Jacques with perhaps more finesse in the past and it did not quite have that "je ne sais quoi" that the greatest vintages have demonstrated. This is a very fine Premier Cru, though this year it is outshone by a few of its Rousseau stablemates.
