Tasting Notes

The 2017 La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion is aromatic, vibrant and fresh, but it has plenty of stuffing as well. Dried herbs, menthol, licorice, tobacco and cedar add pretty savory notes. Pliant, lifted and vibrant in feel, La Chappelle is an absolutely stellar second wine.

The 2017 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion offers crunchy blackberry fruit on the nose, better defined than I found it out of barrel. The palate is fresh and crisp on the entry thanks to a fine bead of acidity, subtle tertiary notes infusing the black fruit with veins of black olive and a discrete marine-like note on the finish. Enjoy over the next decade.

The 2017 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion is a blend of 49.2% Merlot, 41.9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8.9% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with spice-laced notions of warm plums, mulberries and cassis with touches of tree bark, cloves, pencil lead and yeast extract. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm frame of chewy tannins and refreshing acid supporting the spicy black and red fruits, finishing a little grippy.

Deepest healthy crimson. Very fine graphite nose over scented – violets? – black fruit. Super-creamy richness, moderate intensity but real precision. Bright, juicy and with great purity of fruit, lingering and full-fruited finish with moderated tannins. Mouth-watering freshness.

The second wine of the estate is the 2017 La Chapelle de La Mission Haut Brion (49.2% Merlot, 41.9% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc brought in between the 4th and 29th of September). It has beautiful sweetness in its black cherry and black raspberry fruits as well as ample tobacco and gravelly earth-like aromas and flavors. With medium body, polished tannin, and integrated acidity as well as a good finish, it’s a classic Grave to drink over the coming decade or so.

The 2017 La Chapelle de la Mission (second wine) offers a vibrant torrent of raspberry pâte de fruit and anise notes, backed by bitter plum and a hint of fruitcake. It has good tension, with a graphite spine, lingering spice notes and some sneaky grip too.

This is a lovely fragrant wine, less dense and concentrated than the last two vintages but extremely accomplished. It has beautiful aromatics, gorgeous red fruits and an overall feeling of brightness and cohesion. It's fresh, succulent and easy to recommend. Frost only affected 0.3% of the vineyard area, leading to yields of almost 50hl/ha across the two estates in 2017. It was the third earliest harvest on record at Haut-Brion, commencing on 24 August for the whites and 31 August for the reds, with the only real difficulty to overcome being the low levels of sunshine over the summer. 22% of production went into this wine.
