Tasting Notes

The 2007 Lascombes has a simple bouquet that is almost Burgundy-like in style, quite pure but a little monochromatic: simple redcurrant and strawberry scents laced with cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannin, very smooth in the mouth, with a more high-toned finish than its peers. There is something quite lactic about this Margaux, easygoing but lacking the intellect of its peers. It is a Lascombes that is probably à point, but it should continue giving pleasure over the next decade. Tasted February 2017.

Tasted at the UGC in London. This has a light, well-defined nose with blackberry, cedar, cranberry and violets. Nice lift and very Margaux. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, but builds towards the fleshy middle with supple blackberry and cranberry flavours, intertwined with cedar and tobacco. Good length. Prominent oak, but it seems to be soaking in nicely into that comparatively lush fruit. Not a bad effort in a challenging growing season.

This has another one of those very Burgundian nose with some black cherries, cedar and well-integrated vanillary new oak. Very good delineation. The palate has a lot of fruit concentration but it is rather smothered in oak at the moment. Perhaps a little overdone? It lacks a little freshness and tension on the finish.

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com 08 April 2008

Bright ruby-red. Expressive, rather wild aromas of cassis, mocha and espresso. Lush and broad, with good sweetness for 2007. The musky espresso quality carries through in the mouth. Slightly chunky but ripe and satisfying for 2007, offering good weight and richness. Finishes with chewy, nicely ripe tannins and good spine.

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar 01 July 2010

A brilliant effort for the vintage, the 2007 Lascombes is an impressive, larger-scaled wine with beautiful notes of incense, spring flowers, blackberries, cassis, and subtle spicy oak. Full-bodied, rich, and concentrated, with no hard edges, this voluptuously textured Margaux can be drunk now or cellared for 15 years.

Very attractive dark chocolate and blueberry aromas follow through to a medium body, with fine tannins and a medium finish. A little tight, but stylish. Best after 2012. 14,585 cases made.

Berry and floral character, with medium body, medium tannins and a short finish.

James Suckling, Wine Spectator 31 March 2008

Blackish crimson. Dense, minerally, rather distinctively intense aromas. Very thick and sweet and dense. All stops pulled out here and the tannin quality is nice. Not too flabby. Well done. More powerful than most but still with a good texture. Lots of work and thought seems to have gone into this. Real progress. (17+ Points)

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2012-2016 10 April 2008

Intense black-red, solid concentration of blackcurrant Cabernet fruit, lots of extraction but not heavy, impressive fruit on the palate, ripe, good depth, potentially complex and very good medium term.

Inky colour. Powerful nose with chunky fruit and smokiness. Broad with concentrated black fruit with very dry tannins. A much more extracted style with a firm finish. A departure in style from the other Margaux.
