Tasting Notes

Tasted at The Ledbury Gruaud Larose lunch, this bottle is consistent with previous encounters. The nose has very good lift, opening up a little more with age with blackberry, tobacco and showing a touch of crushed stone this time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins but bold and there is much more cohesion than the 1999. There is a hint of Hoi Sin towards the finish that is still dominated by blackberry, cedar and graphite. It needs another five or six years to really come round, but great potential.

A very strong effort for Gruaud Larose, possibly eclipsed by what they have done in 2009, this is a pure, full-bodied Gruaud Larose with plenty of new saddle leather, cedar wood, black currants, cherries, licorice, and Provencal herbs. Spicy, earthy, full-bodied, and rich, it has hit its plateau of full maturity, where it should stay for another 20 or more years.

This saturated bluish-black/purple-colored wine seems at first closed and broodingly backward. In the mouth, it is dense, textured, full-bodied, pure, yet, at the same time, closed. This wine is large-sized, with high tannin but equally high extract and richness. The wine will require patience, and seems to me to be the best effort Gruaud Larose has put forth since their sumptuous 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.

Very dark, thick crimson. Lead pencils and great intensity on the nose with real interest. Hooray! Maybe the merest hint of brett stops the fruit from being super fresh. Shame because it promised much initially. Rather awkward tannins on the finish. (17.5- Points)

Deep garnet colour. Ripe blackberry and dried plum aromas are joined by a slightly sweaty, hung-meat and leather character with musky nuances of damp forest floor. The full bodied palate is laden with complex earth and warm, dark-fruit flavours supported by medium acidity and a medium+ level of velvety tannins. Long finish. Drink now to 2029. Tasted February 2009.

Absolutely wonderful aromas of flowers, currants and citrus. Full-bodied, yet very, very refined, with a center core of fruit that tastes like crushed raspberries and goes on and on. Greatest wine from this estate since 1945. Best after 2010.
