Tasting Notes

A dark horse this one! Touches of roasted coffee beans on the nose. Moderate definition but it gains intensity and clarity with time, developing some secondary scorched, earthy notes. The palate is well balanced, fresh and chewy with macerated black cherries, melted tar, graphite and turning peppery towards the lingering finish. Good length. Very fine. Tasted October 2009.

Score: 90

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com 01 January 2010

Sweet, gentle, fine tannins, all in balance even if not dramatic. Well done. Neat and some good length.

Score: 16 - 17

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com Maturity: 2009-2018 04 November 2009

A relatively masculine-styled effort, with some noticeably hard and elevated tannin, this deep ruby/purple-colored 2002 exhibits notes of forest floor, black currant, vanilla, and incense. Firmly structured, tannic, and muscular, it requires 3-4 years of cellaring, and should keep for up to two decades.

Score: 88

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, RobertParker.com Maturity: 2008-2025 01 April 2005

Good dark color. Black licorice and berry aromas. Medium- to full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe tannins and a beautiful silky texture. Kirwan is always very good, even in difficult vintages. Best after 2007. 5,830 cases made.

Score: 89
