Amphora Wines in Burgundy

Terroir defines Burgundy and vice versa...  This specificity of how Pinot Noir flourishes from one patch of soil over another continues to captivate wine lovers and winemakers, and knowledge of place and history runs deep... as with the Magniens whose family have been Burgundy wine growers for over a century.  

Located in Morey-Saint-Denis, Frederic Magnien now runs his branch of the family Domaine Michel Magnien owning 18ha across Morey St Denis, Chambolle Musigny and Gevrey Chambertin. The Domaine's vines have an average age of 50 years, certified organic since 2008 and biodynamic since 2015. 

Frédéric is a pioneer - his aim is to fully respect the purity of the fruit and terroir to refine the identity of each wine, abandoning the use of new oak in the wines, evolving the style of the wines away from wood influence. The result is vividly fruited, since 2015 ageing of the whole production is aged part in clay amphorae & part used oak barrels (from one source only, Domaine de la Romanee Conti). Bottled without fining or filtration.

These are singular, crystalline wines.

2017 Vintage

MSD Les Chaffots 2017 - "Here the expressive nose is a bit more elegant with softly spicy and earth-inflected aromas that derive mostly from the red side of the fruit spectrum. There is a bit more concentration to the slightly more refined medium-bodied flavors that flash a hint of salinity on the firm and built to age finale. Good stuff."

2020 Vintage

MSD 2020 - "Typical, spicy, slightly meaty notes. Very good freshness on the palate. Dark fruit, no hint of overripeness, just lots of drive and finesse. Youthful but has a long future ahead."

Gevrey Chambertin Seuvrees 2020 - "An even earthier and more sauvage-inflected nose reflects mostly aromas of poached plum and dark raspberry along with a floral top note. The succulent and velvet-textured medium-bodied flavors also evidence touches of bitter pit fruit and rusticity on the nicely lingering finale that is firm enough to suggest up to a decade of cellaring would be appropriate."

MSD Blanchard 2020 - "Roast meat on the nose. Crisp palate with lovely red/black-fruit flavours and plenty of extract and ripeness. Acidity to keep all in check with fine-grained tannin and judicious use of oak, long and intense on the finish."

MSD Charmes 2020 - "A pretty blend of purple fruit, violet and whiffs of earth and spice give way to equally succulent but more refined middle weight flavors that are at once seductive yet precise, all wrapped in a more complex and persistent finish where a touch of youthful austerity slowly emerges."
