2023 Bordeaux
The Albany team has been in Bordeaux this week, visiting Chateaux to assess the 2023 Bordeaux vintage. Tasting the wines first-hand, we found an exciting vintage in the glass. This will be quite a different campaign to 2022 (a small vintage released at a slow pace at high prices).
2023 - The Headlines
- Classic contemporary Bordeaux in style, with vivid fruit, energy & precision.
- Variable but with lofty peaks of quality & some exceptional wines
- A fast pace to releases, with some top names due out early next week
- A bigger crop, especially in St Estephe, Pauillac, St Julien & Pomerol
- The most expensive Chateaux are expected to reduce prices significantly
The global fine wine market has been slowing down over the past year & prices on many top wines have softened, hastening widespread talk in Bordeaux. We hear that many of the most prestigious Chateaux are now aware that regardless of quality, the success of En Primeur depends more than ever on getting the price right - both for 2023 and for the system.
A fast pace of releases with significant price reductions could present an opportunity for collectors willing to step in.
